NEWARK — Authorities released body-worn camera footage Friday night. fatal shooting by police in Newark last month.

Footage released by Newark and Fremont police shows the officers confronting each other. Footage shows Lopez Castaneda lowering his left arm to his waistband and grabbing a replica pistol. In response, a Newark police detective and three Fremont police detectives opened fire on López Castaneda. Three Fremont police officers also fired less-lethal weapons, including a 40mm launcher, police said.

Footage shows the replica pistol flying out of López Castaneda’s hand, hitting the hood of the Mercedes-Benz and landing on the ground. López Castaneda also fell to the ground and police said they were tended to by officers until paramedics arrived.

It took about two seconds for López Castaneda to grab the replica pistol, the officer opened fire, and the replica pistol hit the ground.

Lopez Castaneda was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was taken to a local hospital, but police said his injuries were not life-threatening. Police said no passengers were shot.

The four officers who fired commercial weapons last month were Newark Police Detective Trevor Damewood, Fremont Police Detective Anthony Piall, Fremont Police Detective Jesse Hartman, and Fremont Police Detective Thomas Degenstein. was identified.

In addition to body-worn camera footage, police have also released surveillance footage of a carjacking that occurred at Block 5700 on Thornton Avenue on February 14. Surveillance footage also included a recording of the 911 call. In the phone call, the man said his car had just been stolen and that the suspect had threatened his son with a knife.
