Southern California Norburn Order Extended Due to High Pollution Forecast – Daily News

LOS ANGELES — The South Coast Air Pollution Control District extended a mandatory ban on indoor and outdoor wood burning across much of Southland until tomorrow on Sunday due to expected air pollution in the area.

The ban on firewood in homes is in effect until at least 11:59 pm Monday. It affects all of the South Coast Air Basin, including the non-desert portions of Los Angeles County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, and all of Orange County.

This order does not apply to mountainous areas above 3,000 feet, the Coachella Valley, or high desert. Households that rely on wood as their sole source of heat, low-income households, and households without natural gas service are also exempt from the requirement.

The No Burning Ordinance prohibits burning wood and manufactured fire logs, such as those made of wax or paper. Gas and other non-wood fireplaces are not restricted, according to SCAQMD.

Fine particles in wood smoke, also known as particulate matter or PM2.5, can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause respiratory problems such as asthma.
