Without an iota of doubt, Mexico is one of the most interesting countries to visit in the world. In fact, I can bet that you will not be disappointed by any destination that you choose to visit in the country. However, it is important to realize that there are some taxes that you are required to pay during your stay in the country. These are:

  • tourist tax
  • visiting tax
  • Environment tax payable at hotel

If you choose to fly into Mexico, the first two taxes should be included with your airfare and there will be nothing to pay upon your departure from Mexico. However, if you entered Mexico through land and have not paid the Tourist Tax, you can make payments at the immigration offices at the airport. You will find that each terminal at the airport has an immigration office where you first need to pass through before checking in.  The airport departure tax is included in your airfare. If it is not, you will find an immigration officer who will let you know where you can make payment.

The second tax that you should be aware of while visiting Mexico is the Visitax. The Visitax tourist tax was introduced on 1st April 2021 and is paid by all tourists aged 4 years and above. Under the law, a tourist must pay 241 pesos when visiting the state of Quintana Roo (source: cnn.com). The tax can be paid before or during your trip on the Visitax website. However, it is also important to note that the tax is not being enforced and the authorities will not ask for proof of payment. You therefore have a choice to pay or not pay the Visitax tourist tax. You also cannot pay this tax in cash.

However, there are people walking around the airport with signs that ask you to pay for Visitax. The most they can do is to help you pay it online but no one will ask you for the receipt. Our guess is that the majority of the tourists don’t pay this tax as the decision to pay or not is up to you.

Visitors will also be required to pay an environment tax of 20 pesos (source: statista.com). This tax is payable at the resort where one is residing.
