Victims of two Tesla fatalities found on Highway 1 near Pescadero
(KRON) — Two victims have been confirmed after a fatal head-on collision between a Tesla and Subaru SUV into a beach lagoon on Highway 1 near Pescadero.
The San Mateo County coroner identified the Tesla driver as San Francisco resident Patricio Cabrera Jr., 29. Cabrera was recovered from a submerged 2022 Tesla and was pronounced dead Tuesday night.
The Subaru driver, identified as 66-year-old James Allan Willis of Davenport, also died. Passenger Astrid Willis, 62, from Davenport, was airlifted to Stanford Hospital with serious injuries.
The double fatality occurred Tuesday at 6:39 pm on Highway 1 near Bean Hollow State Beach.
California Highway Patrol officers found the Tesla “completely submerged and the Subaru partially submerged,” wrote CHP Officer Art Montiel. Investigators determined that the Subaru was driving north on Highway 1 and the Tesla was driving south.
“One vehicle crossed the yellow double line and skidded the other. Both drivers lost control,” Montiel wrote. The two vehicles slid down the embankment and landed in the lagoon.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. CHP said it was unclear whether drugs and alcohol were contributing to the crash.
Anyone with information should contact Police Officer A. Musil at 650-779-2700.
