Teenager dead, man injured in East Auckland shooting
AUCKLAND — A 16-year-old boy has died and a 23-year-old man was injured in a shooting in East Oakland late Friday night, officials said.
The victim’s name has not been released. They are believed to be residents of Auckland.
Police did not say if the two knew each other.
The two were found shot at about 10:59 pm on Friday at Block 6700 on Avenal Avenue, a residential area in the Havencourt neighborhood.
The boy was confirmed dead at the scene. The man was taken to hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.
Investigators later determined that the two were actually shot several blocks away on Block 2800 on 68th Street, but were able to reach Avenal Avenue where they were found. A number of shell casings were found on his 68th Street, officials said.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation. No arrests have been made.
The killing is the 114th murder investigated by Auckland police this year. The California Highway Patrol is also investigating his six murders on Oakland highways. At this time last year, Auckland police were investigating 129 murders in the city.
