CONCORD — A man died shortly after 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning after smashing his pickup truck into a giant metal pole on Interstate 680, police say.
The unnamed victim died after crashing near the junction of Interstate 680 and SR-242. The white Ford F-150 he was driving struck a metal pole used to support a highway overpass on the right shoulder of the highway near the junction, police said.
The man was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived at the crash site. He was Ford’s sole resident. Police have not disclosed his age or place of residence.
Police did not say whether alcohol or drugs were the cause, but confirmed that the man appeared to have been speeding. Witnesses are encouraged to call the California Highway Patrol at 925-646-4980.
