Racehorse dies from injury after being separated from handler at Los Alamitos – Daily News

Cypress — Another racehorse has died at Los Alamitos Racecourse. This is his 19th horse fatality at the track this year.

Sugar Girl, a 2-year-old filly who had never raced before, died Saturday in an accident, according to the California Racing Commission.

CHRB spokesman Mike Marten told the City News Service on Tuesday.

She was due to run Saturday’s 10th race, but was listed as a vet wound according to the official race charts. Ross her latest workout at Alamitos she was on November 30th.

As of 2022, 8 horses have died from race-related injuries at Cypress Racecourse, 3 from training injuries and a further 8 from ‘other’ causes.

Earlier this year, Los Alamitos took a series of measures aimed at improving safety after four horses died in 11 days.

Eleven horses have died from racing or training injuries at Los Alamitos in 2021, with an additional two horses listed as ‘Other’. In July 2020, he was put on temporary probation by the CHRB for his track due to a spate of racehorse fatalities. At the time, in 2020, at least 20 of his horses had died from injuries while racing or training.
