Today is Transgender Remembrance Day. A day to honor the lives and memories of trans people lost to senseless violence. Instead, we mourn the loss of yet another hate crime against our community.

Republicans always say now is not the time to politicize gun violence because they are cowards in the gun lobby. These people should not have died in vain. Now is the time to act.

We need real gun violence prevention now. But that’s not all. Address the roots of anti-LGBTQ+ violence. We need perfect equality. Now is the time to commemorate their legacy by passing the Marriage Respect Act

Americans were awakened this morning to horrifying news: a brutal attack on an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs. It is heartbreaking to see so many more people slaughtered and injured or permanently traumatized.

The attack on Club Q on the eve of Transgender Day was despicable and further shattered the sense of security of LGBTQ Americans across the country. Democrats are taking important steps to combat gun violence in Congress right now, but this deadly attack is a challenge to our conscience and we must keep fighting to do more. It reminds me of

Thank you to the brave people who stopped the shooter and to the brave first responders on the ground. And may it be a comfort to the Colorado Springs community.

9:30 am

President Biden was one of the first to post on Twitter. The President also issued a detailed statement included below.

While the motive for this attack is not yet clear, what we do know is that the LGBTQI+ community has been subjected to horrific hate violence in recent years. Gun violence continues to have a devastating and disparate impact on LGBTQI+ communities across the country, and the threat of violence is on the rise. We saw it in Orlando 6 years before him. That’s when our country suffered the worst attack in American history that affected the LGBTQI+ community. We continue to see it in the epidemic of violence and murder against trans women, especially trans women of color. And tragically, we saw it last night in this devastating attack by a long rifle-wielding gunman at her LGBTQI+ nightclub in Colorado Springs.
A safe place of acceptance and celebration should never be transformed into a place of fear and violence. But it happens too often. We must eradicate the inequalities that contribute to violence against LGBTQI+ people. We cannot and must not tolerate hatred.
Today, yet another community in America is being torn apart by gun violence. Many families left empty chairs at their tables, leaving holes in their lives that could not be filled. When do you decide enough is enough? We must address the public health epidemic of all forms of gun violence. Earlier this year, I signed into the most significant gun safety legislation in almost 30 years, among other historic actions. But we have to do more. To get weapons of war from the streets of America, a ban on assault weapons must be enacted.
Today Jill and I are praying for the families of the five people killed last night in Colorado Springs and for those injured in this senseless attack.
