Is it okay to write a cover letter using ChatGPT?

Between AI and recent layoffs, the tech industry looks very different these days.So what does that mean if you’re looking for a career in tech? I recently met a career coach Ken Coleman to find out.

Coleman is Ramsey’s personality, author, radio host, and daily career advice provider.

First, he shared his thoughts on the recent massive tech layoffs.

“These big tech companies will lay off staff when they see signs of a recession because it’s a matter of stock prices. It’s not about judging people. That’s why they staff when everything’s hot.” When it threatens to get cooler, we cut back on staff,” Coleman says.

Coleman says losing a job can be traumatic, so he asks friends and family to help him get through it. Move on.

“You’re not a failure. You’re part of a big financial system and it has nothing to do with you. It has a lot to do with the company,” Coleman said.

He tells you to look for positions where you can do what you’re good at, what you want to do…and ask yourself: What kind of results do you want to have in the world?

“The final piece about that is realizing that you’re not going to step into it right away,” Coleman said.

Remember to do your own research on job listings and beware of fraudulent postings.

“We don’t just want to be on the internet. Or… does anyone know someone working over there so I can understand if this is real work?” Coleman explained.

Coleman told me he’s not against job seekers using AI technology like ChatGPT for the first draft of their cover letter.

“Make sure you’re properly addressing the needs of that job description, I think it helps you stand out,” Coleman said.

Remember, the same technology that helped streamline the job search is now something we’re all competing against.

“So I think those of you who are doing very difficult jobs are a threat to your role. [Like] basic accounting practices or administrative duties; I think AI will replace these types of jobs because of efficiency. But I think it will spin off more work because it can’t replace the human touch,” Coleman concluded.
