Former California city employee sentenced to 5 years in corruption case

Adelanto, Calif. (AP) — A former Southern California city councilor has been accused of taking a $10,000 bribe to help start a cannabis business and hiring someone to burn down his restaurant to pay for insurance. He was sentenced to five years in prison, prosecutors said. .

Jermaine Wright, who served as a city council member and acting mayor of the city of Adelanto in San Bernardino County, was convicted in June of bribery and attempted arson, according to the federal attorney’s office.

Wright, 46, of Riverside, was found guilty Monday by U.S. District Judge Jesus G. Bernal.

Wright was arrested in 2017 and charged with soliciting and receiving bribes from an FBI agent posing as someone seeking help with the marijuana transportation business.

He was also charged with paying another FBI agent $1,500 to set fire to his restaurant, the Fat Boyz Grill, to collect insurance money.

Wright said he hoped the damage to his restaurant was “complete,” according to the pre-sentencing report. They said the sprinkler system would be rendered useless, the report said.
