WomenShelter Long Beach interim director takes job permanently – Press Telegram

Kathy McCarrell has been the interim executive director of WomenShelter Long Beach since January, and will now remain permanently.

Apparently, six months was enough for both McCarrell and the WomenShelter Board of Directors to decide that the relationship works. McCarrell became the permanent executive director of the nonprofit, which provides services and shelter to victims of domestic violence, on Friday, July 1st.

In recent years, McCarrell has built a career of temporarily leading several nonprofits while looking for permanent directors. She has served as interim executive director, for example, at both the Long Beach Public Library Foundation and the Long Beach Day Nursery.

But McCarrell has a master’s degree in social work and has studied the causes and effects of domestic violence. McCarrell is passionate, he said, about supporting survivors of domestic violence and stopping the cycle of that abuse.

“I am delighted with the opportunity to take on the role of executive director,” he said in a statement, “as the WSLB is poised for amazing growth due to the strong Board of Directors and the compassionate and competent staff members I have come to know and appreciate. while working alongside them for the past six months. “

WomenShelter currently operates a seven-bedroom emergency shelter, which opened in 2019, thanks to a large grant from the Mari Laulhere Cherese Foundation. It cared for an average of more than 2,500 victims a year, including mothers and children.

There is also a Domestic Violence Resource Center on Long Beach Boulevard where WomenShelter offers counseling, health referrals, attorney assistance and more.

The nonprofit organization also has a 24-hour crisis hotline, which features trained advocates; Women who need immediate help, including safe housing, can contact the confidential hotline at 562-437-4663.

“While we seek to grow our organization and serve the community, Kathy’s many years of experience in nonprofit management and impact program development make her the perfect person to lead our organization,” said the president of the counsel, Kristi Fischer, in a statement. “We look forward to all that you will achieve as we work to develop a sustainable and successful future for WomenShelter of Long Beach.”
