IN California woman, who for 26 years had claimed that a burglar had forced his way inside her apartment and stabbed him to death, is now charged with his murder after an anonymous letter was sent to the police.

Jade Benning, now 48, was living in Santa Ana at the time of the January 1996 murder.

At the time, the then 22-year-old lived with her boyfriend, Christopher Hervey, also 22.

Benning told police that a black man entered the residence in the middle of the night while they were sleeping.

A fight broke out with the man who stabbed her friend several times during the attack, which happened around three o’clock.

Benning made some “general statements” to the police about the alleged burglary.

She said she sustained a small cut to her right hand when she wrestled with the killer.

A witness also told police they saw a man running out of the apartment building.

Hervey was found dead with multiple wounds to his chest and body, although a weapon was not recovered, the Orange County Register.

Neighbors also told how they had heard a loud argument shortly before the murder, which lasted about 15 minutes.

Investigators continued to work the case, but their leads went cold until an anonymous letter arrived in January 2020 that involved Benning in the murder.

A homicide detective believed there was enough to go after the case and received a criminal complaint from the Orange County District Attorney’s office along with a warrant for Benning’s arrest.

Benning, who now lives in Austin, Texas, was arrested Tuesday near her home after an investigation that involved forensics.

Agents of the U.S. Marshalls Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested her. Detectives from the Santa Ana Police Department were also present to see Benning arrested.

She will be extradited to California to confront the murder prosecutors and held on $ 1 million bail.

In the years since the murder, Benning lived in Las Vegas in 2001 before moving to Austin.
