Woman given photos that connects Central California and Portugal

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – Boxes fill the back of Kathi Gulley’s van – each full of photos her grandparents exchanged with family and friends in Portugal over the past century.

“There were photos of people that none of us knew and it was obvious that the photos were taken in the Azores,” he said.

The photographs date to the early 1900s, around the time her grandfather immigrated from Portugal to Central California.

“They left it – there was no opportunity and now I see the beauty of this place they had to leave behind,” Kathy said.

Kathy inherited the photos when her father died in 2015. She posted them on Facebook.

Eventually, a Portuguese historian contacted her and explained the value of the photos.

“Before 1974, Portugal was ruled by a dictator,” Kathy said. “People were very poor, very few people had cameras, so there are very few photos during this time period of the photos I had.”

To honor her grandparents, Kathy agreed to send the photographs to the Luis da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Archive in the Azores. He also donated equipment needed to preserve the images.

“I have been told that they can only express that it was like a child on Christmas morning to open this package with all these photos,” Kathy said.

The Azores Library works in a permanent collection where people can study historical facts.

Kathy and her family plan to attend the inauguration in June.

“I take my grandchildren to walk the same streets my grandparents walked,” he said.

Kathi hopes this serves as an example that no story is too short to preserve.
