Will Smith resigns from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences following backlash over Chris Rock slap

LOS ANGELES – Will Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as he faces possible discipline for Chris Rock’s slap in the face at the Oscars.

Smith issued the following statement Friday afternoon:

I have responded immediately to the disciplinary hearing of the Academy and I will fully accept all the consequences for my behavior. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and unforgivable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my best friends and loved ones, everyone in attendance, and the global audience at home.

I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other candidates and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be honored for their outstanding work. I’m cracked. I want to focus again on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to return to the incredible work it does to support creativity and art in cinema.

Thus, I resign as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and I will accept any further consequences deemed appropriate by the Board of Directors.

Change takes time, and I commit to doing the work to ensure that I will never again allow violence to transcend reason.

The news comes just two days after a meeting of the Academy’s board to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith for breaches of the team’s standard of conduct.

Founded in 1927, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is the world ‘s leading cinema – related organization with more than 10,000 renowned filmmakers, according to the Academy’s website. The organization recognizes excellence in the art of motion pictures.

David Rubin, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said in a statement on Friday afternoon:

“We have accepted and accepted the immediate resignation of Mr Will Smith from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. on April 18. “

On Sunday, Smith stepped down from his seat at the front-row Dolby Theater and struck Rock, who had made a joke against Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Moments later, he won the Best Actor award for his role in “King Richard.”

Rock, who was to present the Oscar for Best Documentary, refused to file charges when asked by police. He only briefly referred to the attack publicly, saying at a comedy show in Boston this week that he was still “working on what happened.”

Smith shocked the theater crowd and the audience at home when he took the stage after Rock joked: “Jada, I love you. ‘GI Jane 2’ I look forward to seeing.”

Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia areata, had a well-shaven head similar to that of Demi Moore in the original film.

The producer of the 94th Oscars, Will Packer, told ABC News in an exclusive interview that LAPD officials told Rock, “We will do whatever you want and one of the choices is that we will go and arrest him immediately. “.

“I knew he (Chris Rock) had an amazing set of jokes we had. We had them on the prompter. And in the end he didn’t come up with a joke,” Packer said.

“And I thought that was part of something Chris and Will did on their own. I thought it was a little bit,” Packer explained when asked about the moment Smith took the stage. “I was not worried at all. I thought, okay, you know, he will say something or come up against him, something funny will happen because that’s Chris’s nature and that’s Will’s nature.”

“As soon as I saw Will screaming on stage with such vitriol, my heart sank,” Packer added. “And I remembered as soon as I thought, ‘Oh no, oh no. “Not so.” And Chris was holding his head when everyone else lost theirs. I never felt as overwhelmed as I did at the time. “

“As the winners leave the stage, Chris is with them and I immediately go up to Chris,” Packer explained. I said, “Did he really hit you?” And he looks at me, and he says, “Yes.” He says, “I just got a punch from Mohammed Ali,” as only Chris can. it was still a big shock. “
