Will Smith breaks silence about infamous Oscars slap

Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock, a month after he slapped him at the 94th Academy Awards.

“Chris, I apologize,” Smith said in a video posted to Instagram. “My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Smith took the stage and slapped the Rock after Jada Pinkett joked about Smith’s short hairstyle. Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia, which causes hair loss.

The joke turned on Smith, who said his wife didn’t tell him to go up there and handle the situation.

“I made a choice on my own, based on my experience and my history with Chris,” Smith said. “Jada had nothing to do with it.”

Smith said he reached out to Rock, but was told the comedian is not ready to talk.

Asked why he didn’t apologize to Rock in the lead role after winning the Oscar for best actor, Smith said he was “clouded at that point.”

Smith apologized to Rock’s parents, his family and the other nominees, who felt the moment overshadowed the awards show.

“To all my candidates, this is a community. I won because you voted for me and it really breaks my heart that your moment was stolen and tarnished,” she said.

Smith said he deeply regrets the video and is “deeply dedicated and committed to bringing light, love and joy into the world.”
