Woods added: “I had empathy for the victims I did not have then.”

After the kidnapping, Woods and his accomplices – Richard and James Schoenfeld – each pleaded guilty.

At the time, they received 27 life sentences without the possibility of release.

An appeals court later overturned the sentences, ruling that the men at some point in their time behind bars should have a chance at parole.

In 2012, Richard was released on parole.

Three years later, his brother followed in his footsteps.

What happened at Frederick Newhall Woods’ parole hearing?

Frederick Newhall Woods first became eligible for parole in 1982 and has held 18 parole hearings since.

His parole hearing in March 2022 was held at the California Men’s Colony, a state prison.

If the decision of the hearing remains, it will become final 120 days after the hearing.

Once the allotted time has elapsed, the governor has 30 days to review her decision.

He can then leave the decision alone, or send it to a full board for further consideration.

Victims of the abduction, now adults, spoke with CNN in 2015 about their remaining fears related to the tragic event.

“I was overwhelmed to the point that I had to leave work,” said Darla Neal, who was a 10-year-old student at the time of the abduction.

“I tell myself I have to shake this off and deal with it. Yet I’m here, a mess.”

What happened during the Chowchilla abduction?

On July 15, 1976, three men grabbed a school bus in Chowchilla, California, and abducted 26 children, ages five to 14, and their driver.

The prisoners were kept in a truck and buried alive in a grave in Livermore.

At the time of the abduction, Frank “Ed” Ray – the bus driver – was bringing students from Dairyland Elementary School home from a summer trip to the local fair.

A van would block the road in front of the bus, in which three armed men jumped out and confronted the driver.

While underground, Ray and one of the older students were able to dig their way out of the truck.

Sixteen hours after they were buried, the group came out physically unharmed.
