As they gradually recover from the pandemic, many companies are figuratively leaning forward, securing inventories and adopting new types of positions. The Barge There is no difference. It recently hired Brandon Weider as a senior commerce editor. A brand new title for the next chapter. When I asked Brandon if he could show me his workspace at home, this is what he showed (and taught) to us.
Tell us a little about yourself. What is your background and what are you doing The Barge??
Great question!I started recently The Barge As the first advanced commerce editor. For now, I’m sticking to trading improvements, buying guides, gift guides, and other types of potentially commercial content. If it’s an article containing product recommendations (laptops, headsets, what you have), it’s quite possible that I’ll consider it someday.
Before you start The Barge, I have managed a similar type of evergreen content for many years. Digital trends, Another consumer technology site. He also regularly published alternative newspapers as a freelance in Portland, Oregon. I currently live with my partner and two cats. I mainly wrote about local bands and tour bands, but there are a lot of outdoor stuff here and there.
How did you decide where and how to set up your workspace?
Well, “decision” is a strong word. The pandemic forced my partner and I to work from home. I think I was very lucky to be able to do that, but at first I didn’t have the dedicated space for both to work. Fortunately, when the unexpected desk shortage in 2020 subsided, we were able to set up a desk in the corner of the room, right next to the rain-view window. It may be small and unsatisfactory in terms of feng shui, but honestly, it is comfortable. The space is overrated.
Tell us a little about the desk itself.
The desk Mangear desk From Wayfair. I didn’t really choose it … let’s say I inherited it when I exchanged my workspace with my partner at home. It’s hard to admit, but I like it. It’s relatively sturdy and gives you just the right amount of storage space. It’s not very large, but it has one drawer that can be stored. AirPods Pro And probably all the cables that should have been thrown away 10 years ago.
And what about your desk chair?
Like my desk Louise desk chair I came with the territory when I took over the office. I was looking for a match for a brass guest bed tucked into the corner of the room. It’s a bit too attractive to my taste, but it’s very comfortable and blends nicely with other decorations. Apparently , This is “curated by Kelly Clarkson”. This was immediately apparent when I was looking at the product list. I wish I could tilt it.
The setup is fairly simple compared to some of Verge’s compatriots. Can you tell us a little bit about your technology?
Things can really reach me, so I try to keep things clean. For work, i M1 MacBook AirBut given that it’s in the vault under my desk, you don’t know it. This is a great machine developed by Dieter and the team. Already gushing..
At the front of peripherals, I recently Dell Digital High End U2720QIt’s a great 4K display that offers a slightly wider screen area than Air, while at the same time charging your laptop via USB-C.I also have apple Magic keyboard And Magic trackpad 2I’ve never been a big fan of desktop mice, so when I picked up an external monitor, the trackpad made sense.
Elsewhere on my desk Anker Wireless Qi Charging Pad With my iPhone X Sonos OneI listen to everything from political post-punk to the gorgeous instrumental work of Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnals, but the Sonos lineup is really shining regardless of genre. I’m not good at the entire ecosystem, especially given its simplicity.
Tell us about an interesting piece of wood on your desk. And — jawbone?
When I’m not working, I spend most of my time outside. He loves hiking and backpacking and is deeply involved in one of the local SAR organizations, Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue. Driftwood comes from the coast of the San Juan Islands. Rocks from a small summit in Sun Valley, Idaho. My attraction to nature extends to the bones — I know it’s morbid — that’s why Bobcat’s skull is on the desk. However, I’m a little confused at this point because I lost to the cat.
I am fascinated by the old-fashioned light bulb next to the plant.
So-called mood lighting. There is a small company in Portland. Glove maidManufactures a variety of desk accessories using wood and leather. Most of them run on the expensive side, but the quality is excellent.I got a walnut lamp that was out of print a few years ago, but recently Leather pad Where the keyboard and trackpad are located. It’s basically me trying to put more natural elements in the creases.
And there is a notebook and a pen near the keyboard.
Okay!Like most people in The Barge, I probably have more spreadsheets and Google Docs than I would admit. With a notebook, you can write down simple notes and keep them handy. Also, it feels really good to write physically once in a while. I think this is something that many of us can thank. Field note They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some of which are waterproof.
Is there anything in your workspace that we don’t cover?
not really! The only other thing worth noting is my backlight. This is important during rainy times if you live in a rainy area like me. For me, Philips Hue color bulb One of the reasons is that we are leveraging the Hue network. If you need a bright light for a Zoom call, or if you need more grumpiness for off-hours work, just tell Alexa. It’s super convenient.
