A new strain of the omicron virus that causes COVID-19, BA.2, is rapidly becoming the leading cause of infection in global warming. Immunologists Prakash Nagarkatti and Mitzi Nagarkatti of the University of South Carolina explain what the differences are in the past, whether there will be another increase in the United States and how best to protect yourself.
What is BA.2, and how is it related to omicron?
BA.2 is new subvariant and omicron, a major strain of SARS-CoV-2 strain that produces COVID-19. While the origin of BA.2 is still unknown, it has quickly become a major phenomenon in many countries, including India, Denmark and South Africa. It is continued to spread in Europe, Asia and many parts of the world.
The omicron diversityofficially known as B.1.1.529, of SARS-CoV-2 has three main subvariants in it seed: BA.1, BA.2 and BA.3. The first omicron intermediate to be identified, BA.1, was first reported internally November 2021 in South Africa. While scientists believe that all subvariants can have came out almost simultaneouslyBA.1 ya most dominant responsibility for the number of winter infections in the Northern Hemisphere in 2021.

The first omicron subvariant, BA.1, is unique in the number of modifications it makes compared to the original version — it has more than 30 mutations in the increase protein which helps him enter the cell. Spike protein substitution is a major concern for scientists and public health officials because it affects how a certain type of infection is and whether it can avoid immunization produced by the body after vaccination or before COVID-19 infection.
BA.2 da eight unique mutations not found in BA.1, da lost 13 mutations that BA.1 has. BA.2, however, divided about 30 mutations and BA.1. Because of its similarity, it is considered a subvariant of omicron as opposed to new variations altogether.
Why is it called the ‘stealth’ variant?
While standard PCR testing they are still able to identify BA differences.2, they may not be able to differentiate it other than delta variants.
Is it more contagious and fatal than any other variant?
It should be noted that while BA.1 has the dominant numbers in the worldit causes less severe disease compared to the delta variants. Recent studies from United Kingdom same to you Denmark suggesting that BA.2 may result in the same clinical risk as BA.1.
Does a previous infection with BA.1 provide protection against BA.2?
Yes! IN recent studies suggests that people infected with the original BA.1 background have strong protection against BA.2.
Because BA.1 causes infectious diseases worldwide, it is possible that a large percentage of the population is immune to BA.2. This is why some scientists predict that BA.2 will be less likely to cause a major tidal wave
However, while natural immunity acquired after infection COVID-19 may provide strong protection against re-infection from previous variants, weakening the omicron.
What is the effect of antibiotics on BA.2?
IN the first recent study which has yet to be studied of over 1 million people in Qatar suggest that two doses of either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine prevent infection from BA.1 and BA.2 for several months much before they drop to about 10.%. IN shooting stimulushowever, it was able to redefine protection near the original levels.
Importantly, both vaccines were 70% to 80% effective in preventing hospitalization or death, and this effect increased to more than 90% after calories.
How concerned does the US need to be about BA.2?
The rise of BA.2 in some parts of the world is likely due to a hade of higher dispersion, decreased human immunity and relaxation of COVID-19 inhibitors.
Although there may be an increase in BA infection.2 in the coming months, immunization against immunization or back infection provides protection against serious infections. This can reduce the likelihood that BA.2 will result in a significant increase in hospitalization and death. The United States, however, back after other countries when it comes to vaccination, and fall even further on developers.
Whether there is a recurrence of the disease depends on the number of people who have been vaccinated or who have previously been infected with BA.1. It safer to provide immunity from vaccination, however, than getting an infection. Get vaccinated and upgraded as well take preventive measures such as wearing N95 masks and keeping people away are the best ways to protect yourself from BA.2 and other variants.
