In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the 7-2, 14 amendment process clause protects a woman’s right to abortion.
It was Jane Roe Nickname Norma McCorvey. She was a 22-year-old unmarried woman who was pregnant with her third child in 1969.
McCorvey sued the Dallas County prosecutor because state law banned abortion unless it was necessary to save a woman’s life.
McCorvey said Texas law was unconstitutional and violated his right to privacy.
The court ruled that a woman has a constitutional right to an abortion up to the point of viability of the fetus, up to approximately 24 weeks.
By the time the Supreme Court handed down its verdict. McCorvey gave birth to a baby boy and left him for adoption.
