What is monkeypox, and how worried should Americans be?

The worst cancer outbreak in the world, the brother of a cancer patient, has now arrived in the United States and Canada. As of Saturday, 92 confirmed cases of the virus, as well as 28 other suspected cases, have been reported in 12 countries, according to the report. World Health Organization.

Between 1 and 5 confirmed are currently being investigated in the United States, according to the WHO.

Monkey pox was first seen in Britain, Portugal, Spain and other parts of Europe in early May. On Friday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control monitored six people in the United States for possible infections. They sat next to an infected passenger on a flight from Nigeria to the UK in early May.

CDC officials are also investigating a possible case meningitis at a Massachusetts man who traveled to Canada recently, according to CNN. And the New York Department of Health is investigating the possibility of infection in a patient at Bellevue Hospital there.

Despite these recent outbreaks in areas where the virus is relatively rare, and something new is worrying about it the disease can be transmitted sexually, health experts they warn against overdoing it and the seed. Unlike newer developing diseases such as COVID-19, meningitis is recognized and improved treatments are available.

“No one should panic,” said Anne Rimoin, head of epidemiology and public health at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Monkeypox is a well-known virus that is being introduced into new communities.”

The disease starts with fever, swollen lymph nodes and other flu-like symptoms, and then swelling of the face that spreads to other areas, including the genitals, arms and legs.

Possibility of sexual transmission

The symptoms are similar to those of children but are much simpler, Rimoin said.

“It can take several weeks, and people may feel unwell,” she said. There are effective treatments, however.

Meningitis spreads from the beginning animals to humans-and not often from person to person because of the need for close contact with body fluids, says Hannah Newman, director of epidemiology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

“Anyone who is experiencing a rash or injury that is not normally seen and has dangers [or had sexual encounters with someone who has] care should be sought immediately, ”she said.

Many new cases in the world have occurred between homosexuals and bisexual men.

On Monday, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, chief medical officer in the Spanish capital, Madrid, said the city had received 30 confirmed cases of meningitis so far. He said authorities were investigating possible links to a recent gay event in the Canary Islands, which attracted nearly 80,000 people, and complaints at a Madrid sauna.

According to Newman, “it appears that the sexual orientation component can be accessed to current outbreakswhich we have not seen in previous outbreaks. ” Homosexual men or two men may be at particular risk during the current outbreak, she said.

However, “I feel like this is a virus that we understand, we have a vaccine against it, we have a cure for it, and it spreads differently than SARS-CoV-2 (a virus that causes COVID- 19), “Dr. Ashish. Jha, White House COVID-19 response manager, said ABC News on Sunday.

“It is not as contagious as COVID. So I am confident that we can keep our hands around it,” Jha said. “But we will follow up closely with the use of our resources to ensure that we continue to prevent the spread of the disease while caring for people infected.”

New questions

Causes of previous outbreaks include contact with living or dead animals and eating wild or wild animals from wild animals, Newman said.

Once the virus has jumped from animal to human, human-to-human transmission can occur through direct contact with a drop of air. body fluids or skin lesions.

In Africa, anywhere from 1% to 15% of monkey pox victims will die from the disease. “The disease is serious too [death] is higher among children, adolescents, and people who are not immune, ”Newman said.

The disease was first identified in 1958 when a pox-like disease broke out in monkeys. The first known human trial took place in the 1970s in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and has since been reported in person in some Central and West African countries, according to the CDC.

While this is not the case in the United States, this is not the first time monkey pox has been reported in the country. The 2003 outbreak was linked to infected white dogs imported as pets.

Many questions about the new outbreak remain.

“We need to keep an eye on it and understand how it is and how it is introduced into the new public,” Rimoin said.

The outbreak appears to be linked to the West African meningitis virus, which Rimoin says is slower and causes fewer symptoms than in Central Africa.

“Once this information is available, we will know a lot more,” she said.

The outbreak is not surprising, she said. In recent years, my cases meningitis once eradicated the virus also emerges.

“It is not surprising that we see some poxvirus viruses around the world as a result,” Rimoin said.

Vaccination here

Fortunately, cancer treatment can protect people from measles.

In fact, the U.S. government has already ordered $ 119 million for prevention along with an additional option. British health authorities are giving meningitis vaccine to some healthcare professionals and others who may have contracted monkey pox.

The good news is that meningitis outbreaks are rare and usually not very long, Newman said.

2003 US tearfor example, it is integrated quickly through extensive testing, referral vaccination and treatment, and guidance for patients, clinicians, veterinarians and other veterinarians.

“All 47 people have recovered, and none of the 47 people have contracted the disease to any other person,” she said.

Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated during the past few months, according to the report Associated Press. But in the past week, the United States has been among seven countries to report the virus, mostly among young people who have never traveled to Africa before.

France, Germany, Belgium and Australia confirmed their first cases on Friday AP reported.

“I am amazed. Every day I wake up and there are many countries affected by the disease,” said Oyewale Tomori, a veterinarian, who sits on some of the World Health Organization’s advisory committees.

“This is not the kind of proliferation we have seen in West Africa, so there may be something new in the West,” he said. AP.
