We’ve pinpointed blood proteins activated in the most severe cases of COVID in children

In most cases, children who take COVID will not end up suffering from the disease. Kids have small markersminor ailments, and they recover faster than adults.

The best case scenario for children is that they seem to have controllable symptoms, recover well, and immediately test positive. As researcherswe wanted to understand why some kids are worse than that.

If they do not recover, children with COVID may develop two different diseases. The first is Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) where patients have severe inflammation on the skin, eyes and even. internal organs such as the heart, lungs, and brain. The most interesting (and confusing) thing about MIS-C is that it does not occur in adults, only children. The second illness is Respiratory disease (ARDS), life threatening respiratory failure the result of poor COVID.

By comparison blood sample from healthy children and those with severe COVID, we identified two subtypes of proteins activated in children with these cognitive disorders.

Looking for attractions

We spent the last two years trying to understand how children’s bodies interact with COVID, and why it differs from adults. Through us researchWe wanted to understand exactly what the virus is doing to children to cause their small numbers to develop MIS-C or ARDS, so we can help find new ways to diagnose or even treat them.

You may have heard the story knowledge of genomics– A scientific technique that can examine all the details of a person’s genes at the same time. In our research, we used it sunadarai which allows us to view hundreds of proteome simultaneously.

Whenever something changes in the body (like a virus like COVID) it can cause changes to your protein. This helps us to tell which body system is affected.

We took blood samples from healthy children (collected at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne) and compared them with blood samples from children with MIS-C or ARDS (collected at the pediatric hospital). Hospital Necker Enfants Malades, France). We performed proteomic tests on samples and found hundreds of proteins from each patient.

When we compare the number of each protein in samples from children with severe COVID to healthy blood samples, we found there were 85 proteins that altered in MIS-C and 52 proteins that altered in ARDS.

Blood pressure and immunity play a role

The list of proteins is only the first step. It is very important for us to know the exact functions of these proteins in the body. By understanding the role that each of these proteins play, we can begin to understand the biology underlying the disease.

We can also point out that children with MIS-C are affected by B-related proteins (which help facilitate an immune response) and antibodies (which fall off foreign bodies in the body). Our work continues

Fortunately, the MIS-C and ARDS cases are rare. But that does not mean we should not try to understand them. Especially when severe COVID is dangerous for the children affected and threatens their relatives.

By reducing the potential for blood-borne COVID-containing proteins from hundreds to less than 100, we can participate in the development of improved diagnostic and therapeutic data.

This study is part of a larger goal of our study, which is to understand how COVID affects adults and children differently.

We have already been able to show platelet (the small blood vessels that cause clotting) play in adults and childrenwhile bleeding set in children COVID results more durable and less stable.
