Video shows moments after shark attack that left swimmer with major injuries to stomach and leg

A new video shows a California man is dragged to safety by an off-duty cop and a local surfer moments after a shark attack left him with a broken femur and ‘heavy bleeding’ with stomach and arm injuries.

The attack happened Wednesday at 10:35 a.m. at Lover’s Point Beach in Pacific Grove, California, about 85 miles south of San Francisco.

New video shows other beachgoers rushing to help retired IT specialist and teacher Steve Bruemmer who is bleeding profusely. He was thought to be swimming 150 meters away from the beach when he was attacked.

The images show Bruemmer lying on a surfboard while two swimmers paddle furiously to get him to shore.

One of the rescuers shown in the video, Heath Braddock who taught children surfing in the area, told KSBW: ‘We got my biggest board and the gentleman, Paul, helped me roll the victim on the belly of the board down and made him kind of central and stable. We let him keep my food and we paddled him in it. ‘

Another of the rescuers was Sacramento police officer Paul Bandy. Bandy told the station: ‘He screamed for help, you could feel the sound and the emotion in his voice that there must have been something wrong and he hit the water.’

He went on to say, ‘I was not sure if that was such a thing that he was trying to get something away from him or just to draw attention to himself.’

Bandy was on board with his wife Aimee Johns, a nurse, for her anniversary. Johns told KSBW that when they got the victim to the shore, they cut off his wet suit and applied tourniquets to his limbs and body. John said he was ‘bleeding heavily’.

One of the rescuers, surfer Heath Braddock, said he ‘got the victim on the belly of the board and got him a little middle and stable’ and then paddled next to off-duty police officer Paul Bandy

Johns told NBC’s ‘Today’ program that the couple heard someone shout, ‘Help, help, help,’ as they splashed.

Her husband, Paul Bandy, added: ‘As soon as we got close to him, we could see that he had severe cuts to his arms and legs.’

Braddock told the program that when he heard Bruemmer’s screaming, he grabbed a few boards and pulled out two plates. As I got closer, I saw a kind of pool of blood. It was probably the size of a table or a car. ‘

When they returned to the beach, Johns said, “His leg was almost cut off.” Bandy said: ‘Severely injured. All the way to the bone. ‘

One of Bruemmer’s friends, Jill Hannley, told KION that he ‘kelp crawls’, a practice of swimming just above the vast forests of colorful seaweed in the Pacific Ocean. The victim is a member of a local swimming club that regularly swims at Lover’s Point.

Hannley described her friend as being attacked by a ‘very large shark’. She said that none of Bruemmer’s blood vessels were ‘broken in’, but that his femur was broken.

She said it will be a long recovery, but doctors expect the victim to be well. His leg will not need to be amputated, Hannley said.

Bruemmer is a retired IT specialist and teacher at Monterey Peninsula College.

A firefighter drone was deployed in an attempt to locate the shark after the attack.

Pacific Grove city manager Ben Harvey said of the Monterey Herald that the shark was seen after the attack in the area.

A witness, Fernando Beltran, who was riding in an area overlooking the water, told the Herald that the attack resembled two swimmers drowning in the water.

During the attack, Beltran said he saw the retired IT specialist being dragged under the water for 10 to 15 seconds.

He said, ‘I was in shock for a minute, thinking,’ Oh that can not be a shark. ‘ I thought it was two guys wrestling. ‘

On Christmas Eve 2021, Sacramento man Tomas Butterfield was killed when he was attacked by a shark while swimming in Morro Bay, 150 miles south of Pacific Grove. He was 42 years old.

There has been no confirmation of which breed of shark was responsible for the attack.
