Veterans, service members honored at Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony at Tesoro Viejo

Madera, CA (KFSN)-Local veterans and military personnel were honored at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony on Tuesday in Tesoro Viejo, Madera County.

The special ceremony on Tuesday coincided with the timing of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The attack on Pearl Harbor killed 2,400 US military members and civilians, plunging the United States into World War II.

“It reminds us that the attack is notorious, but what we need to focus on is our response,” said Madera County District Attorney Sally Moreno.

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, the Tesoro Viejo Anniversary Ceremony thanked the “Greatest Generation” with salutes and taps on the rifle.

The families of survivors of Pearl Harbor were also presented with a special wreath from the daughters of the American Revolution.

Madera district lawyer Sally Moreno was the keynote speaker for the event

“There are so many days of those days that you know where you were when that happened,” she said. Eighty years ago may seem old, but they are still in us. People who remembered what happened and saw America stand up, react, and get together. “

USS Arizona was destroyed that day and is now functioning as a resting place for lost lives.

“I didn’t know what was going on,” said Air Force veteran Bill Tokumoto.

Tokumoto was only seven years old when he witnessed an aerial battle between fighters while living on Oahu that morning.

A person currently living in Fresno states that this event motivated him to join the service when he was 18 and would retire as a major after spending 26 years in the Air Force.

“I didn’t know anything because there was a war in Europe at the time. You don’t really think about it until you hear the gun rattling as the planes fly,” he said.

Mr. Tokumoto was awarded a special parliamentary certificate from the office of Representative Jim Costa for his dedication to the United States.
