Valley parents await state announcement on masks in schools

BISALIA, California (KFSN) – California is expected to make an announcement about school face masks on Monday, February 28th.

It comes two weeks after the mask expires indoors for vaccinated adults and a few days after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new instructions on the mask in the classroom.

“We hope to have some good news tomorrow, but history shows that this may not happen,” said parent Jesse Perez.

Perez has four children in Visalia Unified schools. He said he would like to see mask rules for students lifted, but believes parents and their children should choose whether to wear masks in class.

“This is it, guys. We just want to give them the choice. If they choose to wear it, they choose. If not, we support them,” Perez said.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to announce a timetable for eliminating mask requirements for students.

However, one thing to keep in mind – if he bases his decision on the latest CDC guidelines, students in Central Valley will have to wear a mask to school.

Based on this map CDCMost counties in Central California have high levels of the COVID-19 community – all of them orange.

However, parents like Jesse hope that the masks will become optional.

Encourages other parents to bring their children into the discussion, to learn how they feel. This he did with his children.

“Three out of four told me they didn’t want to wear it anymore. One said ‘Dad, I’m used to it’ and I was okay with that and I’m saying that some kids are okay with that.” said Pereth.

The announcement of California is expected on Monday morning. Stay with ABC30 for full coverage.
