Valley doctors, parents eagerly await Pfizer authorization for kids 5-11

Fresno, CA (KFSN)-Young children have taken a major step towards making the COVID vaccine available on Monday.

Pfizer announced that tests have shown that the vaccine is safe and effective for children aged 5 to 11 years.

It’s a source of relief for many parents, but it doesn’t mean anything for a while.

Pfizer will still need to submit the data and obtain an emergency permit from the FDA.

Hundreds of COVID patients have visited Valley Children’s Hospital in the past few weeks as Delta variants have increased significantly from what doctors saw before July.

Fresno County has confirmed more than 25,000 COVID cases in children since the outbreak of the pandemic. There were more than 4,000 cases last month and thousands more this month.

The largest increase is occurring among children between the ages of 5 and 11.

Therefore, Dr. Nael Mhaissen states that releasing vaccinations to that age group could be a game changer.

“I think the timing is actually perfect, as the number of cases of COVID-19 in children continues to grow,” said a pediatric infectious disease expert. “This particular surge in COVID-19 has had a greater impact on children than any other age group.”

More than 2,000 children between the ages of 5 and 11 received the Pfizer vaccine at one-third of the dose given to adults.

The company said it built the antibody without significant safety risks. However, Dr. Mahissen is cautiously optimistic because he has not released the data yet.

“If everything goes well like the approval of the previous age group, I think we’re considering preparing a vaccine for children in that age group next month or so,” he said.

Dr. Mhaissen said it was exciting to give young children an additional layer of protection against severe illness and hospitalization, especially back in school.

The local school district is also paying attention to approval.

Kelly Avants, a spokesman for Clovis Unified, told Action News that the district monitors to see the reaction from Sacramento.

They know that some parents are eagerly awaiting and a local clinic is set up, including UCSF’s mobile HEAL unit.

Dr. Kenny Van, who heads mobile heels with free vaccinations and COVID testing at Fresno’s UC Merced site across from fashion, said: Fairmall. “We are ready to go.”

Pfizer is also testing the vaccine for younger children up to 6 months of age.

These studies are a month or two behind this, but if all goes well, children aged 5 to 11 years may be included in October and children younger than that may be included by the end of the year.
