Valley congressmen react to President Biden’s State of the Union Address

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – Leaders on both sides of the aisle wore blue and yellow, showing solidarity with the country of Ukraine as it comes under attack.

President Biden has vowed to severely underestimate Russia and Putin.

Republican MP Tom McClintock says bipartisan support for Ukraine is unwavering, but neither side agrees on the impact on energy here in America.

“In order to provide any assistance to the Ukrainians, they need to continue their fight and do everything we can to cripple Russia’s economy, but we must restore American energy independence,” he said.

Fresno MP Jim Costa says Biden was able to unify the chamber by supporting law enforcement investments.

“Focusing on the fact that we need to fund our police, not refinance it,” he said.

The president’s speech acknowledged the impact that opioid drugs have on much of the country, including Central Valley.

“Stop the flow of illicit drugs by working with state and local law enforcement agencies to prosecute traffickers,” said President Biden.

Mr McClintock said it was a problem that could be attributed to weak immigration policies.

“Our borders have been opened,” he said. “Fentanyl is flooding beyond these open borders and now it wants to stop. A little late but maybe better late than never.”

Lawmaker David Valadao says he would like to hear the president report on the water crisis for California growers that has had a national impact on consumers.

“There are thousands of acres in the Central Valley that are struggling and all we need is water,” he said. “And if you were more helpful on the seafront, obviously that would make a huge difference and help reduce the cost of food.”

On the coronavirus front, Biden announced that people would be able to order another round of free quick tests from the government, and announced that the administration was launching an initiative to provide free antiviral pills to pharmacies for those who are positive for the virus.
