Valley Animal Center seeing rise in pets being returned to shelter

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – At the Valley Animal Center in downtown Fresno, Ruben Cantu says his phone was ringing from people who say they can no longer keep their pets.

Has received 12 requests in the last few days only.

“We have seen an absolute uproar in the owners’ delivery requests. This was something that was very difficult to keep up with,” he says.

So far this year, 433 pets have been delivered to the Valley Animal Center – about 100 more than they usually see at this time of year. 60 animals adopted at the center were returned.

The reasons?

“We see a little bit of everything. The financial difficulties are great. The relocation is great. The animal behavior problems are great,” he says.

Cantu says people should dedicate their time to the adoption process and ask lots of questions about what it really means to care for a pet and its specific breeds.

“You will never ask me many questions. I will talk to you for hours about a dog to make sure you understand what you are up to and that you are prepared,” he says.

If and when difficulties arise, food assistance and pet supplies are available through the Valley Animal Center.

And help with pet motherhood adjustment is available in Fresno State through Payne Animal Welfare Lab or PAW Lab.

Along with more pets for care, the Valley Animal Center is even more in need of animal care assistance and equipment to do so.

“Volunteering is a great way. By donating any used resources – we get used blankets, used towels, used dog supplies … kennels, food bowls, we use them all. Any resource is a positive resource.”
