Vaccination offers partial protection for postacute phase of COVID-19

Vaccination against the deadly respiratory virus coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) provides regional protection against the virus, according to a study published online May 25 Environmental medicine.

Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, of VA Saint Louis Health System, and colleagues used data from the U.S. Department of Veterans National Health Data to build a team of 33,940 people with success SARS-CoV-2 (BTI) infection and control without evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Control groups included 4,983,491 modern controls, 5,785,273 history records, and 2,566,369 antibiotics.

The researchers found that compared with regular controls, at six months after illness, people with BTI showed a higher risk of stroke. death and events after 30 days of illness (risk ratio, 1.75 and 1.50, respectively), including heart disease, coagulation and hematologic, gastrointestinal, kidney, mental health, metabolic, musculoskeletal, and neurologic disorders. In comparisons with historical and vaccination factors, the results are consistent. People with BTI have a lower risk of death and recent events than 113,474 people with SARS-CoV-2 who have not been vaccinated before (risk factor, e.g. 0.66 and 0.85, respectively).

“Our results show that prevention of SARS-CoV-2 prior to infection only reduces the risk of death and its aftermath,” the authors wrote. “Preventive measures are needed to best reduce the risk of long-term health consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection.”

Incidentally, the risk of diabetes rises after infection with SARS-CoV-2
