Scholarships for California Students Going out of State

Everyone knows college is expensive. In fact, it’s one of the single biggest expenses most students will ever face in their entire lives. The loans needed to pay for college can haunt students for decades to come. That’s one reason that many students try to reduce the cost of college by going to in-state public schools, where tuition is lower and the costs are consequently less burdensome. However, in some cases, the ideal program or school for you might be a big public university in another state. When that happens, however, students are in for a sticker shock when they realize that the cost of education out of state can be a lot more than attending a similar school in their own state.

So, what can you do? For many students, scholarships are the answer. In this article, we’ll take a look at scholarships for California students planning to attend an out-of-state school.

In-State vs. Out-of-State

Public universities tend to favor students from their own states. That’s part of the structure of the public university system in the United States, but the difference between the prices charged to students in-state and out-of-state can be a huge shock to students who aren’t aware of the disparity. Some schools charge up to three times as much for an out-of-state student as they do for a student who already lives in the state. That’s one reason that many students choose to stay in their home states rather than travel for school.

One of the reasons that colleges and universities funded by taxpayers use this pricing strategy is to try to keep the best and brightest students close to home. In New York State, for example, students can qualify for free tuition in state-run schools if they both live in New York and also agree to remain in New York for a period of time after graduation. Many states have found that there is a brain drain of students who get educated and then move to a more desirable location. Consequently, many states have seen a decline in the number of graduates who are staying in-state and are prepared for modern careers.

That’s one reason that in-state tuition is so much less than out-of-state tuition. But another is that many states feel that families have paid their taxes for years to help fund state university systems, while students from other states have not contributed. Consequently, it’s only fair to ask them to pay more when they come from out of state and use the resources that the state’s working families have funded.

However you look at it, going to school at a public university in another state can be a major sticker shock, especially for students counting on the lower cost of public education vs. private schools.
