A public utility line near Interstate 5 in the Old Town caught fire shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, interrupting the trolley service and closing the highway ramps in the area.

The California Highway Patrol reported that a utility pole “broke and hung” on Taylor Street near the freeway.

Electricity was restored to most electricity customers in the area by 8:15 p.m., but the Metropolitan Transit System was forced to use buses to transport passengers around the Old Town Transit Center.

Some 295 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in Lindbergh Field, Ocean Beach, Golden Hill, Center City, Balboa Park and Midway lost power as San Diego Fire and Rescue crews extinguished the blaze.

SDG & E asked all trains to avoid disembarking and picking up passengers in the area during the line repair.

The North County Transit District reported delays for some Coaster trains Wednesday morning.
