US deaths of new mothers rose during pandemic, minorities hit hardest

U.S. women expect to die higher in first year of COVID-19 infection, either during pregnancy or shortly after delivery, a new federal study reports.

This increase has been particularly acute for black women. They have a three-fold increase in maternal mortality white womenaccording to A study by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

One-third of American women who die while pregnant or in the first six weeks after birth in 2020 are Black, although Black Americans make up almost 13% of the U.S. population.

The report said maternal mortality rates increased by 14% in the first year of the outbreak, from 754 in 2019 to 861 in 2020.

Dr. Denise Jamieson, an obstetrician at Emory University in Atlanta, told the New York Times she was not surprised by the increase.

“Actually we said at the start of the lockout that we expect an increase in maternal mortality, due to COVID and response to COVID,” said Jamieson, a member of the College of Public Health and Gynecologists. and COVID.

Pregnant women are at higher risk for severe COVID-19, but the U.S. health system also fails to adapt to COVID in a way that protects their health as expected, Jamieson said.

Many doctors no longer see patients themselves, and hospitals are often overcrowded with COVID-19 patients making it difficult to get a bed, Jamieson told the Times. Pregnant women caring for children at home cannot go out for a check-up.

Hakanan, Covid antidepressants will not be available to these women in 2020.

Some experts say anxiety of the plague caused environmental problems, among others mental health problems and alcoholism to increase, which can lead to serious consequences.

The maternal mortality rate in the country reached 23.8 per 100,000 born alive in 2020, it increased from 20.1 deaths per 100,000 births in 2019.

That figure represents less than two deaths per 100,000 births in Norway and New Zealand and less than nine deaths per 100,000 births in France and Canada, according to the Times.
