US adds Chinese supercomputing companies to export blacklist

The United States has placed a Chinese company accused of building a supercomputer to help Chinese troops get on the export blacklist.

Three companies and four branches of China’s National Supercomputing Center have been added to the US Department of Commerce’s “Entity List.” This will prevent US companies from exporting technology to the group without a license.

The Commerce Department said the group was involved in building supercomputers used by Chinese “military personnel” and promoting programs to develop weapons of mass destruction.

“Supercomputing capabilities are essential to the development of many, and perhaps almost all, modern weapons and national security systems, including nuclear and hypersonic weapons,” said US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

“The Commerce Department will use its full power to prevent China from leveraging US technology to support these precarious military modernization efforts,” she added.

The Chinese entities are branches of Tianjin Fitium Information Technology, Shanghai High Performance Integrated Circuit Design Center, Sunway Microelectronics and National Supercomputing Center.

This week’s Washington Post reported that Phytium is using US technology to design semiconductors and power the supercomputers used to develop hypersonic missiles.
