Authorities say a burglar suspect who led lawmakers to a chase from Fresno River Park and found himself inside a Save Mart grocery store near Nees Avenue and First Street has escaped.

The scuffle erupted on Thursday afternoon after a brief chase erupted when Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop the suspect at the River Park Mall near Nees and Blackstone.

Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderama said Fresno SWAT officers had entered the store with their K9s to search the building and nearby businesses, but had not found him since Friday afternoon.

Although police did not find him, Balderama said traces of him were found inside the store.

Authorities say the unknown suspect is wanted in connection with a Caruthers burglary.

An off-duty Fresno County Sheriff’s Office spotted him and two others outside Macy’s.

The MP called for backup. When the suspects saw the deputies closing, two of them ran back to Macy’s store. The two suspects have since been arrested.

Balderrama said Save Mart could reopen in a few hours.
