Ukraine leader defiant on victory over Russia

KIIV, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnkyy spoke defiantly on Friday about his country’s latest victory over Russian forces, both in the worst war in eastern Ukraine and in the war in general.

“Ukraine is a country that has destroyed the myth of the magnificent power of the Russian army, supposedly an army that can be conquered by anyone who wants it in a few days,” he told Stanford University students in a video. “Now Russia is trying to occupy the whole state, but we feel strong enough to think about the future of Ukraine, which will be open to the world.”

Later in the night’s video chat, Zelenskyy reacted to the Russian capture of the eastern city of Lyman, a large railway station in the Donetsk region just north of two other Ukrainian-controlled cities, and the Ukrainian leader challenged victory over Russia.
He wanted to surround and take over the city of Sievierodonetsk, one of the last areas under Ukrainian control in Luhansk.

“If the occupiers believe that Lyman or Sievierodonetsk will be theirs, they are wrong,” the Ukrainian president said in a video statement tonight. “Donbas will be Ukrainian.”
