Behind Charisma Osborne’s record-breaking 31 points of the season, UCLA beat Oregon State 74-66 in the WNIT quarterfinals. The Bruins will play in the state of South Dakota in the semifinals next week on Thursday, March 31 at 19:00 CT.
After trailing by 18 points in the second quarter, Oregon State pulled the lead to four points in the fourth, but UCLA remained strong at the end of the section and made free throws, including 11 from Osborne in the fourth. She took 12 of 14 shots from the charity tape this afternoon.
Osborne also scored a record 10 fights for his eighth double-double of his career. The junior guard from Moreno Valley, California, also recorded team tops of four assists and two blocked shots. Jaylin Penn added 17 points for the Bruins (18-12). Angela Dugalic recorded 12 points and seven rebounds in the reserve.
Talia von Oelhofen led the Beavers (18-13) with 19 points. Jelena Mitrovic scored 16 points. Eli Mack finished with 13 points and 6 assists, and Taya Corosdale contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
UCLA used a 10-0 series to take a 12-4 lead over the Beavers with four minutes of play in the fourth. Osborne had eight of those 10 points, including three consecutive points to start the series. The Bruins went one more time, beating the Beavers 9-1 in the final 3:41 of the quarter, with Penn scoring seven of the Bruins’ nine to send UCLA into the second quarter with a 21-7 lead.
After Dugalic squeezed a three in the beginning of the second quarter, Oregon State began to revive, scoring six consecutive points. But UCLA responded with seven consecutive rebounds from Penn and a deep three-pointer and a layup from Osborne to come back 18, 31-13. The Beavers then made a 12-2 run to reach single-digit results, 33-25, and trailed by 10 at halftime, 35-25.
Oregon State overtook the Bruins in the third quarter, 20-14, to close to four, 49-45. The Beavers used von Ochofen’s mutual baskets to come in at five, 41-36, before the Bruins went 7-1 to go ahead with 11. However, the Oregon State finished the quarter with an 8-1 change in momentum within the household audience of 2976.
Penn scored six of his 17 points in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to put the Bruins ahead with eight, 57-49. After the Beavers returned to five, IImar’I Thomas and one with 2:30 to the end gave UCLA an eight-point lead, 64-56. Three free throws by von Ohofen with 24 seconds to go made the game two-possession, 70-64, but Osborne made 4 of 4 free throws in the last 19 seconds to secure the win.
