Tyler Rolison’s big game leads St. Bernard to big win over Long Beach Poly in SoCal basketball regional – Press Telegram

PLAYA DEL REY – It was a tale of two halves.

It was a defensive blow in the first half and an offensive blast in the second half that led the San Bernardo men’s basketball team to a 52-40 win over Long Beach Poly in the first round of the CIF SoCal Regional Division I playoffs on Tuesday night. . .

The Vikings (22-6) were led by baseman Tyler Rolison, who scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half. Rolison also caught five rebounds.

Long Beach Poly (22-7) led 11-4 after the first quarter. Poly also led 16-13 at the break as striker Marcel Hayes led the Jackrabbits with five points and 11 rebounds in the first half.

Immediately after the break, San Bernardo increased the defensive intensity, causing Poly to use a timeout at 11 seconds of the third quarter.

“The first half started slowly,” Rolison said. “After the break, we talked about it in the locker room and we all got together. We just got out and waited for the second half.

“That’s one of the most important parts of my game is that I like to play defense, and that’s what really gets me into the flow of the game.”

The Vikings had a 10-2 run in the first 3 minutes and 38 seconds of the third quarter, forcing Poly coach Shelton Diggs to call another timeout with St. Louis. Bernard leading 23-18.

Poly and St. Bernard would then go basket by basket. The match was tied at 31 for the fourth quarter.

One big and one resulted in a three-point play for second-year St. Bernard striker Kendyl Sanders, and that put the Vikings up 34-31 early in the fourth quarter. Sanders finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, the team’s highest, as he fought the entire game against Hayes and striker Daniel Hardy.

San Bernardo’s offense continued to flow and the Vikings led 46-40 with 1:34 left to end the game. The Vikings outscored the Jackrabbits 39-24 in the second half.

Poly Christian Watson’s senior guard finished with a double-double, scoring 17 of his 20 points in the second half. Watson also caught 10 rebounds.

Hayes finished with five points and 13 rebounds.

Poly’s defensive line revolved around the defenders. Bernard, keeping out of painting senior escort Jason Hart Jr. and junior escort Darius Carr. Add 10 points.

However, it was Rolison and Sanders who Poly had trouble containing.

“We’ve had ups and downs all season,” St. Bernard coach Tony Bland said. “They were able to go out and play games like this, in which we didn’t play our best against a very good team and (we won).”

Bland’s break message was simply, Long Beach Poly was there for a reason.

“You can’t take days off and you have to leave everything on track,” Bland explained. “Our seniors got the team together and got a win.”

The Vikings beat JSerra 71-59 to win the CIF-SS Division 1 championship on Friday, February 25th.

“A lot of people thought we weren’t going to be able to do that, but we proved them wrong and we kept hooking,” shared Rolinson, who has offers from USC and Washington. “It’s always a goal on my back. When people come to play with me, they always want to take my offers away from me, so I keep my composure and my hoop.”
