Two-vehicle crash will be fifth fatality on Highway 4 in 2023

MARTINEZ — One person was killed and another seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 4 late Wednesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fifth fatality on the freeway of 2023 occurred around 10:40 p.m. on the westbound just before the Center Avenue exit, according to an agency statement released by Officer Adam Lane.

The person’s identity was not known early Thursday morning, pending notification from next of kin.

Nine fatalities have occurred on Highway 4 since November 16, 2022, when five people, including three children, died in a wrong-way accident just west of the westbound Loveridge Road exit. are doing.

Lane said the gray Honda Civic collided with the white Toyota Corolla while driving west on the freeway. Both vehicles then lost control, veered off the highway, down an embankment, and hit separate trees.

Medics confirmed the Honda driver was dead at the scene. The Toyota driver was taken to the hospital by ambulance. He remained in critical condition early Thursday.

No one else was in either vehicle.

There have been 35 fatal accidents on the highway so far in 2021, and 40 people have died in these accidents.
