Two dead following gunfire on I-580 in Oakland – Times-Herald

OAKLAND – Two people were killed Wednesday night after gunfire erupted on a Bay Area highway, according to law enforcement sources.

California Highway Patrol officers responded at 8:20 p.m. to those who reported an accident on Highway 580 east of Seminary Avenue. According to a CHP note, agents later learned that the vehicle involved in the accident was also involved in a pre-disaster shooting.

A 21-year-old man was killed at the scene, and a 22-year-old man was killed after being taken to hospital by an ambulance, according to provincial police who were not allowed to comment and asked for anonymity. Both deaths were classified as homicide, the source said.

The killings are the third and fourth on Oakland Highways this year.

Two other people inside the vehicle were also injured, the source said. The CHP said some people in the car were injured in the shooting and others were injured in the crash.

A serious traffic alert was triggered when the CHP closed the Seminary Avenue exit ramp and the westbound lane to the west of the exit.

Traffic receded at least to the 35th Avenue exit.

Oakland police also responded to the incident.

The CHP is investigating and has asked anyone with information to contact the CHP Advisory Line at 707-917-4491.
