Tragedy for Oscar-winner Mark Rylance, 62, as his younger brother dies in horror cycling crash

Sir Mark Rylance’s ‘beloved’ brother has died in a horrific bicycle accident California – in yet another tragedy for the British Oscar-winning actor.

Wine expert Jonathan Waters was driving last week in the late evening in downtown Oakland when he was hit by an oncoming car, which sustained severe head injuries.

The local fire department, who were first on the scene, provided immediate treatment, but, despite being taken to the hospital, the 60-year-old died with love ‘Jonno’ by friends and family the next morning.

It’s another terrible loss for Sir Mark, 62, after one of his two stepdaughters died of a fatal brain haemorrhage in 2012. The star has taken time off the West End stage to travel to the US for a memorial service.

Nataasha van Kampen, a gifted filmmaker, was just 28 when she died unexpectedly on a flight from New York to London.

Jonathan Waters had spent more than three decades in one of California’s most prestigious restaurants, Chez Panisse, where he first cleaned tables before becoming an inspired sommelier.

He was revered not only for his encyclopedic knowledge of wines, but also for what one friend described as ‘his grace and joy, light and knowledge and spirit’.

Sir Mark has two siblings, Sister Susannah and Brother Jonathan, all of whom were born in Kent. The actor took the name Mark Rylance in the 1980s because his first name, Mark Waters, was already taken by someone else registered with acting trade union Equity.

Sir Mark had the lead role in the West End revival of Jerusalem, in what one critic called an ‘almost superhuman’ performance.

This week, theatergoers are told about Jonno’s death and the consequent absence of Rylance.

On Sunday, he will be in California for a service that spends the life of the brother with whom he and her sister, Susannah, grew up in America, largely in Wisconsin, with whom her father taught. and University School of Milwaukee.

Sir Mark published a statement declaring that he would not perform his play Jerusalem at the weekend.

He said: ‘I’m so sorry to tell you that on May 28, my dear brother Jonathan Waters was knocked off his bike and tragically died from his injuries.

‘To attend his funeral in California, I will unfortunately have to miss three performances from Jerusalem on Saturday 11th – Sunday 12th June.

‘Because I have no study to play the role of Rooster Johnny Byron, unfortunately these performances have been canceled.

‘Sonia Friedman Productions, along with Nimax, are arranging additional performances at the end of the planned run to try to accommodate anyone who will be affected.

‘I hope you understand my need to grieve my dear brother and thank you for your support at this time. I hope you can still attend a performance of Jerusalem. ‘

Mr Rylance left his role in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games after the sudden death of his ‘beloved’ stepdaughter.

Rylance – one of Britain’s greatest Shakespearean actors – would recite verses from The Tempest during Danny Boyle’s ‘Isles of Wonder’ ceremony lighting up London Stadium.

But the Olivier Award-winning actor withdrew after announcing that his ‘beloved daughter’ had died of ‘unsuspecting natural causes’.

Nataasha was the daughter of Rylance’s wife Claire van Kampen, and has known the actor since she was three years old. Her sister is award-winning actress Juliet Rylance.

The gifted independent filmmaker, began working at 16 for Sky Television, and went into short film production before joining the London Film School. Her debut, Nocturne, was screened at the London Young Filmmakers Festival.

By sharing her time between New York and London, she described herself as an artist, designer and filmmaker.

She lived in an apartment near the trendy Borough Market, near London Bridge, but believed her love for New York and called it her ‘home town’ on Facebook. One neighbor, who said she had spoken to Mr Fitzgerald, said: ‘She had a brain haemorrhage on the plane. It’s just tragic – she had a heart of gold. ‘
