Torrey Pines High Alum Taylor Fritz Takes BNP Paribas Open Title in Straight Sets Over Rafael Nadal


San Diego-born tennis professional Taylor Fritz easily defeated Spain’s Rafael Nadal in the men’s final on Sunday. BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Fritz, the 20th ranked player in the worldwon online set, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Torrey Pines High Alum won seventh in the ranking Andrey Rublev of Russia, 7-5, 6-4, on Saturday to reach the seventh final of the ATP and first in Indian Wells.
“It doesn’t even seem real,” Fritz said. “It is such a dream come true. It’s all the hard work I have put in all these years. I can see that it finally works. “That’s why I play tennis.”
The 24-year-old Fritz is the first American to reach the Indian Wells final after John Isner in 2012.
The 35-year-old Nadal – whose 21st Grand Slam titles are the most in history – is currently in fourth place.
Poland’s Iga Swiatek, 20, won the women’s title on Sunday, defeating 26-year-old Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-4, 6-1.
Swiatek finished fourth, Sakkari sixth, but both will see their standings rise as a result of winning the finals.
“We have already started a very good rivalry,” said Swiatek, winner of 11 consecutive races. “I think it will last for another 10 years. I’m sure we will play many more finals.
