The San Diego Crew Classic opens Saturday at Crown Point in Mission Bay, with thousands of rowers coming into the water.

Continuing until Sunday, the events include collective competitions for men and women, youth competitions for high school rowers and open competitions, masters and graduates.

The competition starts at 7:15 a.m. every day. The clinics are also open on Thursdays and Fridays.

Spectators are welcome at Mission Bay Park to watch the boats pass or watch the action at Jumbotron. The matches are also broadcast live.

UC San Diego and the University of San Diego are among the local teams competing. Top campuses – the University of Texas, the University of Washington and the University of Stanford – are also expected to attend.

The regatta has developed from the beginning as a three-hour event with 300 participants almost 50 years ago. It is now a two-day regatta with 4,000 competitors in more than 100 races.

Previous champions include teams from Harvard University, Washington, Penn, UC Berkeley, UCLA and Stanford.
