Tom Hanks’s return to Ohio stirs up fond memories for former teacher

With just a few days to go Cleveland Guardians home opening and Tom Hanks planned to throw out his first day of work, hoping to attract the attention of an Oscar-winning actor who spoke to his class 40 years ago with a retired teacher.

Independence Village Avon Lake residents recently posted a viral TikTok about how staff and neighbors were making the best impressions of the movie “Castaway,” asking them to visit Hanks.

Jane Barthles, 93, described how when she first started at the Hanks Great Lakes Theater, the actress visited her 9th grade class at Learwood Junior High School in Avon Lake.

“He came to my classes and stayed all day,” he recalled. “It was a great experience for my students and they had a ball.”

Barthles said the encounter happened by accident when the director of the Great Lakes Theater booked an actor to visit his class, but then had a problem.

“[She said] all I have left are a couple of beginners, and one of them is named Tom Hanks, ”Barthles said.

Hanks was all part of a program that began in Cleveland in the late 1970s and arrived at the Great Lakes Theater at the same time.

Organizers say the outreach initiative that helps build bridges between students and the scene continues today and has grown considerably.

“That’s what they remember outside of high school,” said Lisa Ortenzi, director of education programming at the Great Lakes Theater. “When they think of English class and Romeo and Juliet class or a Shakespearean play, they remember that we came with swords or blood and did performances for students.”

Inside the Hanna Theater, customers will immediately see Hanks ’name on the bar they greet when they enter the theater.

“It’s quite exciting to claim Tom Hanks as a former actor / teacher and former member of the company,” said Kelly Schaffer Florian, director of education services at the Great Lakes Theater. “These are stories that touch people and bring them closer to literature and change their lives.”

Hanks told the announcement video last year when the Cleveland Guardians announced a new name.

Looking at Hanks’ career, which includes two Oscars, Barthles said he is excited to return to Cleveland next week and wants to share a message.

“I’d love to tell you the same thing I said then: it’s been a great pleasure to see what you’ve achieved,” he said. “Thank you so much for coming to my classroom because you left the impression and stayed forever.”

The Guardians Home Opener is scheduled for April 15th.
