Update on magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Humboldt County

Authorities continue to investigate the damage. A 6.4-magnitude quake hit early Tuesday morning It shook Humboldt County residents from their literal foundations, forcing tens of thousands to spend another night in the dark as technicians worked quickly to restore power.

Late Tuesday night, PG&E announced it had resumed service to about 40,000 customers, a figure that includes both homes and businesses.

By Wednesday morning, the utility’s outage map showed at least 15,000 customers were still out of power, nearly half of them in one of the hardest-hit areas alongside Rio Dell. It was in and around a certain Fortuna.

Injury and damage ratings didn’t get updated overnight. The only deaths directly related to the quake were his two, who died in medical emergencies shortly after the quake, and he was reported to have suffered 11 other injuries.

A local state of emergency was declared by Humboldt County Sheriff William Honthal on Tuesday, and Gov. Gavin Newsom made a statewide declaration. The move paved the way for the region to receive emergency aid from state and federal governments. This includes activating the State Operations Center, deploying the State Emergency Services Agency, and beginning access to funding under the California Disaster Assistance Act.

Weather forecasters predict a 30% chance of rain on Wednesday as overnight temperatures hover around 45 degrees and authorities and residents continue to assess the impact of the earthquake. It was recently reported at 1:00 am on Wednesday.
