The five-time Augusta National champion made the announcement on Tuesday morning. He will play another nine training sessions on Wednesday before making the final decision, but will do so with the intention of playing on Thursday.
“From now on,” Woods said, “I feel like I’ll play.”
There have been many signals in recent days that Woods was on the verge of deciding it was time to play again. He came to Augusta National for a training session last week, then returned on Sunday – saying it would be a “match time decision” – and on Monday for more. On Tuesday morning, with bad weather in the forecast, he spent plenty of time in the training areas.
“It’s great to be back,” Woods said.
Woods played in the PNC Challenge in December, a 36-hole race on a flat track in Florida, where he and his son Charlie finished second to John Daly and his son. Woods had the right to use a basket in that match, and when those rounds were over, he categorically rejected any idea that his game was ready for tour again.
“I can not compete with these guys right now, no,” Woods said Dec. 19. “It will take a lot of work to get to where I feel I can compete with these guys and be at a high level.”
About 3-1 / 2 months later, Woods obviously feels different. If he plays, he will be in the Masters for the 24th time. has finished in the top five 12 times in his previous 23 appearances.
Thursday’s opening round will mark the first time Woods has played against the world’s best players since November 15, 2020, which was the last Masters round delayed by a pandemic that year.
He underwent his fifth back surgery two months later and was still recovering from it on February 23, 2021 when his SUV crashed over a waist on a suburban coastal road in Los Angeles and on a hillside.
Woods’ injuries from that collision were so severe that doctors examined the amputation of his right leg before reassembling the limb by inserting a bar into the tibia and using screws and pins to stabilize additional ankle and leg injuries.
“It was a difficult, difficult year … but here we are,” Woods said.
