They’re Back — Indoor Mask Mandates Return to Berkeley Schools, In What May Be the Shape of Things to Come

Hoping to make it through the rest of the school year free of further COVID disasters, the Berkeley Unified School District is reinstating the indoor mask mandate.

We hope you are aware that we are in the midst of another massive catastrophe COVID-19 infection surge in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. Though you wouldn’t know it due to the complete lack of alert, attention or response to the matter from our leaders and public health officials. But at least one group of Bay Area officials is acknowledging the reality of the current situation, as the Chronicle reports that the Berkeley Unified School District is Reintroduction of the obligation to wear masks indoorseffective next Monday.

“Our common goal over the final weeks of school is to ensure that as many of our students and families as possible are able to participate in the final fortnight and accompanying celebrations,” said Brent Stephens, superintendent of Berkeley Unified a Friday announcement. “We are witnessing high levels of COVID in our schools and communities this week, and based on this strong recommendation from the City of Berkeley Health Commissioner, BUSD will reinstate mandatory indoor masks on Monday, May 23.”

Berkeley is the only school district in the Bay Area to again require masks indoors. The Chron also spoke to officials from Oakland and San Francisco public schools, who did not say they were considering following suit.

“We continue to work closely with the San Francisco Department of Health to monitor updates,” SFUSD spokeswoman Laura Dudnick told the Chronicle. “We are following public health guidelines and strongly encourage vaccines and boosters for those (who are eligible), encourage masking and remind students and staff to stay home if ill.”

In some ways, this is the second civic agency, or government organization, in the Bay Area to reinstate a previously dropped mask mandate. BART had a strange situation where she Flip flops their policy the same day by a Trump-appointed judge Abolish mask requirements In late April (Funny how shortly after that we have another COVID surge!), but beard reintroduced this mask requirement one week later. Still, a group of admins reinstated the inside mask mandates specifically because of the recent surge, and a particular phrase about the order of the falling dominoes comes to mind.
