“The biggest thing she did for all athletes was that she said,’You have the option to choose you,'” said therapist Nicole Carter.
Sacramento, CA — Gymnast Simone Biles is probably the most famous face of the Olympics. However, Biles made a headline on Tuesday by choosing to withdraw from the game not because of winning a medal but because of her mental health.
Nicole Carter, a Sacramento therapist and licensed clinical social worker, helped Biles move.
“The biggest thing she did for all athletes was that she said,’You have the option to choose you,'” Carter said.
“They have children who are training in grades 3, 4, and 5. And spirituality pushes your body, pushes your body, pushes your body, so this I think it’s actually a bigger call to say “your mental health is important” in order for her to be the top and voice of the playground at that point. I’m really proud of her. “She continued.
Carter explained that what you see is not always what you get.
“We see her smile, but her internal condition, her nervous system, is probably really really fighting or fleeing, or in a terrible state near shutdown,” she said.
Carter is a former basketball player at the University of California, Davis and the only black player on the team, so he has more insight into the mental health of athletes.
“You’re having fun. I had a great teammate and a great coach, but I’m stressed because I’m the only black man to travel around,” she explained. “Black athletes always have to deal with it. Still, they go out and run and ignore them. And it costs money. Your nervous system, it’s your nervous system. It costs money and sacrifices to you because you are constantly assessing threats, but at the same time you are trying to compete at your highest level. “
In addition, Carter explained that the level of competition could not have been higher for Biles.
“The psychological stress and tension she faces is not only as her teammate, but also as a country on the world’s platforms,” Carter said. “It’s not about achieving medals or physical rewards. It’s about my mentality, my mentality. And it’s the highest award. It’ll be with you for the rest of your life. You win it. If not, you know, what was it all for? “
