Center Nikola Jokić scored 32 points, but the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Denver Nuggets 93-89. All Lakers players who checked in to the game scored in double digits, and five players scored.

“I played the Lakers basketball,” said forward Anthony Davis. “We’re running, we’re helping each other. We’re talking, we were sharing basketball. We’ve done everything that makes up the Lakers basketball.”

The match was at the heart of the night when JaVale McGee received the 2020 NBA Championship Ring. McGee hopes that Ring’s presentation will inform his new young teammates that they too can win the championship.

“It feels like a lot of people aren’t trying to do things just because they haven’t seen them,” McGee said. “It gives hope to many people.

The Lakers’ physique defeated Denver, and the active NBA champion performed five steals and eight blocks during the contest. In the attack, they landed 13 3 pointers. The center’s Marc Gasol has landed three of them. He became more aggressive every time he rode a hardwood. Gasol calls this victory a “team effort.”

“It’s who we are as a team and who we are. Everyone is connected to each other,” Gasol said. “When I go out, I try to do my best to help the team, because helping the team often wins many games.”

Davis led the Lakers with 25 points and 3 blocks. His last block sealed the Lakers victory with seconds remaining.

“Since he came back, this was really, really decisive, especially the first match early in the game,” said Lakers head coach Frank Vogel. “I thought he set us a great tone.”

Davis helped the Lakers lead 12-8 in the first quarter. Forward LeBron James and Guard Dennis Schroeder could not compete. Like most NBA teams, the Lakers endured injury uncertainty, along with a health and safety protocol in line with COVID-19. For security guard Wesley Matthews, this unpredictable season taught him patience.

“It made me a strong believer in faith. You can’t see it. Faith is blind, but you know it’s there,” Matthews said. “You have to keep doing what you have to do.”

The Lakers will fight the Clippers on May 6th and 7pm.
