The Fresno Center receives grant to fight against Asian hate

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – As we celebrate American Pacific Heritage Month, the community continues to face bias associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Fresno County organization is working to help heal the wounds of the Asia-Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community.

The US-based non-profit organization Stop AAPI Hate has been tracking more than 10,000 hate cases since March 2020, most of them in California.

“We have people hurting our community,” said Cheri Cruz.

Fresno County is no exception to the anti-Asian hatred.

Cruz, with The Fresno Center, shared some of the hate incidents reported to the organization.

“There was an incident with a Hmong man. He was attacked in Roeding Park,” he said.

Cruz added: “An Asian man found that his car had been vandalized with hate messages and this happened at a local grocery store and a national market.”

He also noted, “One of the staff at our school in Sanger was there is discrimination in the IHOP restaurant. “

Fresno Center provides culture-based services to underprivileged communities.

With the help of the Sierra Health Foundation, Cruz said the organization could expand its services.

A recent grant will help fund the agency’s latest effort to combat Asian hatred.

The next 30 days will be dedicated to finding out how many in the AAPI community have fallen victim to hate crime. As Cruz said, many are not mentioned.

The grant will also fund intervention and prevention services.

“We will teach community members how to empathize by working with our holistic treatment center, having arts and crafts, developing young people, working in other tribal groups,” he said.

The Fresno Center says it also plans to work with other organizations and community leaders to build alliances and promote understanding.
