The best ways to keep your children safe when playing at a pool

California ranks 2nd in nation for drownings among children 5 and under, survey finds

YOU’RE TAKING A BREAK. BACK TO YOU GUYS. BRANDY: THANK YOU SO MUCH. THE HOT WEATHER OUTSIDE HAS MOST FAMILIES PREPARING TO SPEND A WEEKEND BY THE POOL. BUT IN EACH COUNTRY, DROWNING IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR CHILDREN UNDER FIVE. MIKE: AND A RECENT STUDY FOUND THAT CALIFORNIA HAS THE SECOND HIGHEST NUMBER OF SWIMMING POOL DROWNINGS. JOINING US TO TALK ABOUT THE STUDY AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO STAY SAFE IS NICK VINZANT WITH THE MAGO QUOTE. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME THIS MORNING. >> IT’S FOR YOU TO HAVE ME. MIKE: WHY DOES CALIFORNIA DO SO HIGH WHEN IT COMES TO DRAWING CHOKS FOR THE NEW AGE? >> MOST OF THE REASON IT RANKS VERY HIGH IS FOR CALIFORNIA’S SIZE. IT HAS A LARGER POPULATION, WARMER WEATHER AND LOTS OF SWIMMING POOLS. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF CHILD DEATHS WHAT WE FOUND IS 40% OF SWIMMING DROWNING DEATHS IN THE STATE ARE A CHILD. THIS IS A LARGER NUMBER THAN IN OTHER STATES PAN GREECE. IT’S NOT THE HIGHEST BUT IT IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST DEATH RATE OF DROWNED CHILDREN. BRANDY: WHAT IS THE REASON YOU FOUND IN THE STUDY THAT THESE DROWNINGS HAPPENED? >> WHEN WE LOOKED AT IT THERE ARE THREE MAIN REASONS. ABOUT 60% OF CASES THE CHILD JUST LOVES. YOU KNOW HOW KIDS CAN BE, I HAVE TO BE MYSELF. YOU JUST DON’T HEAR THEM AND THEN THE CHILD IS IN THE POOL. THIS HAPPENS 60% OF THE TIMES. APPROXIMATELY 20% OF CASES THERE IS A COMPLETE BARRIER SEPARATING THE POOL FROM THE HOUSE BUT FOR SOME REASON THE CHILD GOES AROUND IT. THE REST OF THE CASES IT IS NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED THE CHILD WALKED OUT OF THE POOL AND THEN WAS FOUND IN THE POOL BUT WAS SWIMMING AT THAT TIME. MOST OF THE TIMES WHEN WE HAVE A DEATHNYG THAT HAS A CHILD, IT’S BECAUSE THE CHILD IS JUST WINNING FOR A WHILE AND THAT’S WHY ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS GOES AWAY, THOSE, YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE THEY ARE, THE FIRST THING YOU DO IS CHECK IT. MIKE: A LOT OF THIS DATA WILL SURPRISE A LOT OF PEOPLE. DID ANY OF THESE ELEMENTS SURPRISE YOU? >> HOW COMMON IT REALLY IS. WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT, THESE NUMBERS, EVERY ONE OF THEM IS A CHILD. FOR A PARENT MY OWN, THIS MAY BE JUST A HEARTBREAK. IT HAPPENS COMPARATIVELY IN SMALL CHILDREN. THUS WHEN WE LOOK NATIONWIDE, APPROXIMATELY 45% OF COMPLETE DROWNINGS INCLUDE CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 14 YEARS. ESPECIALLY IF THIS CHILD IS UNDER THE AGE OF FIVE. BRANDI: TALK ABOUT KIDS CAN BE LOVED AND THAT’S ONE OF THE WHY THAT’S, WE HAVE ABOUT 36 — 30 SECONDS WHAT ARE SOME TIPS YOU CAN GIVE TO SAFEGUARD KIDS? >> IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER BUT ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS IS MAKE SURE SOMEONE IS DESIGNATED TO WATCH THE KIDS. IF EVERYONE IS SITTING AROUND THE BARBECUE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, IF EVERYONE IS WATCHING EVERYONE THEN NOBODY IS WATCHING ANYONE. HAVE SOMEONE WATCH THE CHILDREN. HAVE A POOL BARRIER, ANYTHING TO SEPARATE THE POOL, MAKE SURE THE POOL IS VISIBLE AND YOU CAN SEE DOWN AND EVEN IF THERE ARE ADULTS THERE, A SURFIST, TALLS, ANYTHING. MIKE: I’M THINKING A LOT ABOUT YOUR TIME THIS MORNING

The warm weather in Sacramento has many families getting ready to spend a weekend by the pool. But across the country, drowning is the leading cause of death for children under 5. A recent study found that California has the second highest number of swimming pool drownings. Nick Vinzant, with Quote Wizard, joined KCRA 3’s morning show to explain ways families can keep kids safe while playing in the pool. According to a study by Quote Wizard, more than 339 people have drowned in California swimming pools in the last three years. Analysts say nearly half of those deaths were children. This study found that of 339 total drownings, 112 occurred in children younger than 5 years. Twenty-four of these deaths were in children between the ages of 5-14. Vinzant said that most of the time if a child goes missing the first thing parents should do is “check the water.” He recommended that people at a party dedicate one person to watch each child and place water barriers near swimming pools See more safety tips in the video above.
