The 2022 Polestar 2 is more appealing, affordable and repairable – TechCrunch

When Polestar goes on sale With the first all-electric vehicle last year, it was offered in a single flavor. It is a dual motor, all-wheel drive configuration that costs about $ 50,000 before incentives. Next year, automakers are adding several types.

Polestar is rolling out a more affordable single-motor, two-wheel drive version of the sedan. This, in addition to the many features of the dual-motor Polestar 2, is a little more affordable and attractive, and more eco-friendly for anyone who wants to make an electric switch. The 2022 Polestar 2 single motor offers Polestar’s estimated 270-mile range, a little less omf, and fewer options, but with enough technology to make driving easier.

Rather than using two motors to power all four wheels like a dual motor, this single motor version pushes all 231 horsepower and 243 pound-force torque to the front wheels. The 2022 Polestar 2 single motor comes with a 78kWh battery pack that sits under the floor between the front and rear wheels. According to Polestar, its usable capacity is 75kWh. The same battery pack is on the Polestar 2 dual motor. Polestar can push wireless updates to all vehicles to speed up charging and fine-tune battery settings for greater efficiency.

The 2022 Polestar 2 Single Motor Sedan will be equipped with an optional mechanical heat pump (available in Pluspacks for over $ 4,000) to help maintain its charge even in harsher climates. According to Polestar, under certain climatic conditions, heat pumps draw heat from the outside air, increasing the range of the vehicle by up to 10%. Using Polestar’s quote, it means that the 2022 Polestar 2 Single motor can earn an additional 27 miles of range thanks to the heat pump.

In this model year, the fully loaded Launch Edition has been removed. The Polestar 2 Single motor replaces it and simplifies it with a metal roof instead of the Launch Edition glass roof, eco-friendly decorations, and several optional “pack” choices that Polestar calls. Comes with a low load setup.

You can opt for a plus pack that includes a heat pump, a glass panoramic roof, Harman Kardon premium audio, and a wireless phone charger (especially). This pack was included in the prototype Polestar 2 I drove. You can also choose a pilot pack ($ 3,200 or more) that includes adaptive cruise control, LED external lighting, and more. Sadly, the vehicle I drove didn’t have an upgraded ADAS system, so I couldn’t test that Polestar was offering Level 2 Driver Support Aid on my drive.

Polestar 2 is characterized by being the first vehicle to use Google’s Android Automotive operating system. Volvo is also rolling out the Android Automotive OS on some vehicles, such as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, but the entire Polestar brand uses this platform.

Android Automotive OS Open source operating system It runs on Linux and is used as the underlying operating system for vehicle infotainment systems, including Polestar. As a result, Google services such as Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play Store are built into the car. The Android OS is not the same as Android Auto, which is a secondary interface that sits on top of the operating system and allows users to project the features and feel of their smartphone onto the vehicle’s center display.

With Polestar 2 in 2022, users can choose to access almost everything in the vehicle via voice control using the convenient “Hey Google” start phrase. Use this phrase to access air conditioning and driving routes. People have been deeply involved in Google’s infrastructure for a long time, so it’s all very intuitive.

Just search Google and ask them to navigate the same as I do. I rarely touched the touch screen while driving. I just asked Google to do almost everything I needed to do.

Natural language recognition has been a long-standing effort of Google and continues to improve. Several times, while using the system, I made a clumsy request, such as failing a request or stopping at a local beach to take a picture. The system didn’t miss the beat, unraveled my language and did what I requested.

On the Polestar 2 Single motor I drove, the charging location was somewhat integrated into the Google Maps platform for Android OS. However, there are some caveats.

You can filter by brand by asking Google to find a charging station along the route. While doing so on Google Maps, the system doesn’t tell you if the charger is available or working. Polestar has partnered with ChargePoint to provide charging access. You can see the details of the selected charger using the ChargePoint app installed on the center screen. You need to tap the screen before hitting the road. This means that you need to stop and stop the car before heading to the nearest charger. The 200-mile round trip from Hollywood’s Pacific Design Center to Santa Barbara didn’t require you to stop to recharge.

If it needed to be recharged, Polestar said the DC quick charger could be expected to charge 80% in about 30 minutes. According to Glenn Parker, Polestar’s technical operations specialist, this has been reduced from 40 minutes to 80% charge. Parker also said that continuous wireless updates will improve the efficiency and scope of the entire portfolio as the company rolls out updates to all owners.

Finding an available charger is still clunky, but integrating Google Maps into Polestar 2’s highly technical fabric estimates every time you move to a new location or add a stop along the way. The range is displayed. On a day trip, we arrived at each destination a few miles wider than the system originally thought. This was a pleasant surprise as I was sitting in the West Side traffic for 45 minutes at the wrong time to return to LA. The range has dropped by about 20%.

The Polestar 2 Single motor is quiet, comfortable and fast. According to Polestar, it will be 0-60 mph in 7 seconds. It doesn’t seem to be that much, but especially the low-end torque is readily available, enough to blend in with highway traffic.

In the prototype I drove, I was able to adjust some driving functions such as steering feel and one-pedal braking, and turn on and off driver assistance systems such as lane departure warning. Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, my test vehicle didn’t have the advanced driver aids Polestar offers in the pilot pack, so I couldn’t test them.

One of the pleasures of an electric vehicle is the availability of braking mode (B mode) or one-pedal driving. Basically, I am adjusting the playback level obtained from the rolling wheel when the accelerator is released.

In Polestar 2, roll and stop, or switch on the “creep” mode setting from the infotainment screen and the vehicle will move slowly without the need for an accelerator pedal. I drive most electric cars with the most aggressive braking settings. This is because it is the most efficient and fun mode to adopt in Los Angeles transportation. Most people may be a little surprised by the best settings for Polestar 2, but after a few minutes of getting used to it, you’ll be able to use it intuitively. However, I turned off the “creep” function because it feels unnatural when combined with the regenerative braking mode.

He also spent 90% of his time behind the steering wheel, using the most aggressive steering setting called “firm”. Basically, the system changes the steering ratio based on the settings you choose. Firm provides the most direct response, but softer settings make Polestar feel a bit more lolly poly and slower response.

Right to repair, readjust, recycle

Polestar has no trouble with its commitment to more environmentally friendly manufacturing and materials. To that end, the company is actively considering the entire vehicle battery life cycle. According to Parker, the company is using blockchain to track the cobalt mining of batteries and is considering using this system to track other factors used in the manufacture of vehicles.

In addition to this, Polestar also considers the battery and owner’s life cycle relatively comprehensively.

Stacked packs of Polestar 2 Single motors can be replaced individually in the event of a component failure. According to Parker, if one component fails, the company retrieves the material to form a closed-loop system. “We are looking for remanufacturing and reuse of the returned components,” he said. Polestar also provides complete repair procedures and access to a catalog of parts that owners can purchase directly from the company itself.

The Polestar 2 single motor starts at $ 45,900 and the vehicle will be available from January 2022. Destination fees and taxes are not included. With $ 7,500 federal tax incentives and tax incentives from certain states, the price could drop to around $ 35,000 (again, taxes and destination charges are not included).
